IU Faculty of Letters and IU Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets Laboratory, Oil Painting and Paper Conservation-Restoration Laboratories are opened in the Faculty of Letters by Rector IU Mahmut Ak on 6th May 2016.
Introduction speeches of the laboratory were made by IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak, Dean of the Faculty of Letters Prof. Dr. Mustafa Özkan, and Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets Head of Department Prof. Dr. Ufuk Kocabaş.
“We Will Provide World Standard Conservation & Restoration”
Indicating that protection is the most important aspect in cherishing the cultural heritage Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak said, “The most important things that need to be considered in protection, are awareness and education. Practice education is an inseparable part of conservation and restoration. Theoretical knowledge should be supported with laboratory practice. We as Istanbul University, consider this subject to be of great importance. We are currently renewing our laboratories and keep our work to have world standard equipment.”
Stating that IU Faculty of Letters Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets, Oil Painting and Paper Conservation & Restoration Laboratories are opened to resolve an importance lack, Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak said, “The restorers and academicians we educate in this field will successfully represent our university just as they do in every other field. In the laboratory, hands-on and theoretical training will be provided in the fields of quality of paper-material works, cleaning, complementation, fortification, materials used and restoration techniques. Additionally, the rare works which are found in the faculty library will be restored. As corruptions can be identified with infrared and ultraviolet cameras that are Scientific Research Unit aided also their repairs, touchups, unreadable texts and signs will be archived by identifying of artist’s preliminary sketch. Again, protection-repair works can be done in world class with the partial low pressure heating table which there are 2 in Turkey and have been bought within the scope of the project. The methods in question are the initials one in protection and repair of oil paintings in Turkey. Our students who are at the level of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate will be well educated thanks to this library. Thus, our university can have a voice in both national and international platforms.
Some Works Will Be Carried for Protecting Our Cultural Heritage
IU Dean of Faculty of Letters Prof. Dr. Mustafa Özkan said that: “The protection of movable cultural heritage and their transferring to the next generations are very important. Developing technological structures cause the corruption of these materials in time. These materials are really in need of repair and maintenance for their sturdily transferring to the next generations. In 1993, a department called ‘Repair and Maintenance’ is opened because of this reason and it has been maintaining its services for 20 years. We continue the services with the aim of training the staff expert in this field. This laboratory deals with the renovation of movable cultural assets generated with paper material. Oil colors, paintings, drawings, writing materials and the maintenance made upon the papers will be examined and the factors which cause papers to wear off will be studied. Materials to evaluate all this are provided in our laboratory.”
“We Aim to Convey This Concrete Cultural Heritage to the Next Generations”
IU Faculty of Letters Head of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets Department Prof. Dr. Ufuk Kocabaş stated that the main aim of the department is to protect movable assets and convey this concrete cultural heritage to the next generations. Prof. Dr. Kocabaş said: “Our department which plays an important role in the protection of our country’s rich cultural heritage, continues to its undergraduate, post graduate and doctorate education with its keen academic staff. In order to train qualified protection and reservation specialists, our syllabus is updated according to the developments in the field. The potentiality of our laboratories is improved each passing day. Our students have the opportunity to improve themselves by working as interns in projects that are carried out by our university such as “Yenikapı Wrecks Project” and thus they have the opportunity to learn with practice. Our university paved the way by contributing to Marmaray and metro constructions. The freeze drying machine which we obtained as a part of our works is used by Istanbul University’s specialists for the first time in Turkey and has been a great success.”
After the opening speeches, ribbon cutting of Oil Painting and Paper Conservation-Restoration Laboratories was carried out and the laboratories were seen.
