Istanbul University Ranks First in The Field Of The Patent Filing Again
In the 5th Turkish Patent Awards, the prize of ‘‘The Top Patent Recipient University’’ went to Istanbul University. The prize of ‘‘The Top Patent Recipient University’’ was given by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak in the ceremony held at Ankara on 20th April 2016.
In 2015, Istanbul University applied for patents for 73 inventions in the fields such as IT, furnishing, material, food, energy, electricity, environment and biomedical technologies. Istanbul University was also the top patent filing university in 2014.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that in Europe, the country with the most trademark application had been Turkey since 2011. President Erdoğan, who said that the same success continued with 110 thousand trademark applications in the previous year, continued his speech: ‘‘These datum reveals the Turk’s entrepreneurial spirit and desire of creating their own brand. This determination cannot be prevented by any power as long as we pave the way and support. We walk resolutely towards New Turkey. I hope, we will absolutely reach our aims of 2023. There is no doubt about it.’’ President Erdoğan congratulated the companies, institutions and their representatives that supported Turkey and were deserved an award.
‘‘We Produce Value-Added New Projects’’
IU Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak expressed his sincere thanks to all the applier lecturers and academic members in his statement. Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak: “Istanbul University, is taking fast and big steps into being a research university. We successfully integrate technological developments into our educational system. Our university, successfully representing our country through generating projects creating added value, is an important element in terms of international competition. By strengthen our studies on the fields of Research and Development and Innovation, we aim to protect our leadership for years to come.”
‘‘The Patents Are Contributing to the Country Development’’
Fikri Işık, Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, Republic of Turkey, stated that the owners of brands and designs are contributing to the country’s development as well as their own by giving importance to R&D and innovation. Minister, congratulating those who won the prizes, said that “Those who won today actually already got the best prize and that is the pleasure of sense of achievement.”
“We Aim to have 50k Invention Applications”
President of Turkish Patent Institute (TPE) Prof. Dr. Habip Asan stated in his speech that they are gathered together to award the people, the institutions and organizations that dominate the area of application for industrial property especially in the fields of patent-filing, branding and designing. Asan, indicating that patent-filing that had been taking a whole year to do in 2002, now takes only 3 weeks, said that “We intend to have at least 50 thousand applications in 2023 in Turkey”.
After the speeches, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Fikri Işık, and President of TPE Prof. Dr. Habip Asan presented the awards to the winners.
